A prominence account of the Northern Mam weight hierarchy

Northern dialects of the Mayan language Mam have a ternary weight scale for assigning stress, with added wrinkle that syllables glottal codas are heavier than those other coda types: VV > Vʔ VC V. This ranking is initially surprising under currently accepted prominence theory (Ryan 2019, 2020), where all equally moraic in contexts. However, phonetic experiment undertaken by Kuo & Elkins (2022) on Todos Santos variety shows (i.e. codas) realized as lengthened glottalized vowels without [ʔ] release, vowel length intermediate between V and VV. Consequently, hierarchy falls out from relative syllable types, consistent Ryan’s account. In analysis, attracts stress away because vocalic moras more prominent consonantal (enforced via constraint VV→MAIN). We build this analysis propose Mam, its higher prominence. result leads to typological prediction, differences phonological should fall language-specific realizations Vʔ.
